Happy new 2025

During these overcast and weiry days, toy trains distract and give joy. So on this new years day there was heavy traffic on the layout. The Lionel 289E speeded by with some Paya passenger cars.

The Merkur freight service had a few heavy rocks to transport.

As a new years resolution, I will run the trains more often in the coming year. I do hope that all train enthusiasts will do the same. Lets run the trains and lay these "smart phones" aside.

Building a bridge to ...

This weekend, I discovered that the Lionel 289E engine is a great engine to pull the Merkur coaches over the new track.

The video shows how smooth the Lionel 289E engine pulls the Merkur coaches 9751, 9330 and 9331.

Additionally I started with building the bridge to the other side (what else) and used the Lionel 817 caboose as the highest car in the rooster to measure the clearance. The bridge is still a bit rough, but it is a start.

Lionel 289E running on the attic

This weekend I decided to make a small oval on the attic floor and run some trains. The Lionel 289E engine still did not run smoothly on the 027 track curves and hence I decided to change the anti-slip tyres and I must say that it still slips a bit, but is running much better.

Final run

The old folding table layout was disassembled today. But before that actually happened the Lionel 289E engine and a small string of passenger cars 607, 603 and 604 made a tribute run over the small layout. Now what is left are photo's, screws, wires and tracks...

The new layout will have a wider radius outer circle, will be really level this time, larger and permanent.

Lionel 289E running

Although it was already late and the light conditions poor, I did try to make a small video to show the Lionel 289E engine running. One of the last issues I faced with this engine were the smooth and slippery drive wheels. On many 027 curves and slopes the wheels just spun hopelessly. Some friends advised me to roughen the wheels. I tried by scratching the wheels, but still they spun on the track. Then I applied a 3 mm wide strip of duck tape on both the rear drive wheels and that seems to do the job.
